Mr. & Mrs. Birdy’s Neighborhood

By EDGE Gallery | Lakewood Pl. at Reed St.

This playful, uplifting artwork connects to the natural environment as a home for birds in this very urban and industrial space. Passersby of all ages will have fun posing in front of wings positioned at various heights and of different sizes for photos and selfies. A network of white vinyl lattice randomly crisscrossing the surface of the fence symbolizes Lakewood as a nest and home for residents, businesses, new artists and art galleries. The birdhouses are painted purple, a color which affects us physically, it calms the mind and nerves, offers a sense of spirituality and encourages creativity. In honor of Lakewood’s military veterans, purple also references the Purple Heart awarded to members of the United States armed forces who have been wounded in action. Purple is the color of the “purple mountain majesty” of the Rocky Mountains and the Colorado Rockies. Finally, a state like Colorado with equal distribution of Republicans and Democrats is referred to as a “purple state,” suggesting unity.
